Auditions for RENT

About the show: Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. The show follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.

REMINDER: This is a rock opera and a sung through 2.5 hour show. The director advises all actors to know their instrument and prepare themselves – if cast – to sing 10 shows with audiences in attendance. (There is a buy out for this show, so one weekend the cast will have two shows in one day).

AUDITIONS: Due to the show being a rock opera, and no major spoken dialogue, requirements for auditions are as follows:

1. AGE: Due to the mature language, themes, and in show content, all actors must be over the age of 18.

2. TWO SONGS: One musical theatre song. 90 seconds max and One nonmusical theatre song. (Or contrasting song) 90 seconds max.

Note: if you are auditioning for more than one character, try to make both contrasting. (Example – Mark and Roger: Purpose – Avenue Q, Perfect – Simple Plan)

5. Please bring all conflicts from February 16- May 25.

6. At the theatre, there will be a digital audition form to sign up; physical paper will be available upon request.

7. MUSIC: No pianist will be on site, so please bring an MP3 of your songs on your phone. Dongle adaptors will be available with our speaker.

8. You will sing in a separate room from the others, and have a small interview with the director.

9. Once you sing your songs, you are free to leave.

10. Callback invitations and pieces will be emailed the following day.

REHEARSAL DATES
Rehersals will begin in late February, 4 days a week in March and April. Rehearsals will be a few hours long, accommodating schedule conflicts.
